It is time to dig out your artists' materials and get creating your artworks for the FAKES & FORGERIES Art competition with a prize pool of over $1000+ in CASH and other goodies at a day of fun events, Art exhibitions, and even a mega Book Fair! - Be sure to mark the 23rd of October 2021 in your diaries Now! The 23rdth October sees the picturesque Rangitikei village of Mangaweka holding it’s Biennial Fakes & Forgeries Art Exhibition and Festival of events, now in its 14th Year! with an added attraction of a Massive Book Fair, Craft Markets, Art demonstrations plus on top of that a town-wide collection of individual 'Garage Sales' for you to browse at your leisure!. The Art exhibition is open to three groups, Adult section, 16 years and under (with entries from $10) and a special free to enter collective schools category which last time attracted over 200 fantastic artworks!. The theme is simple; Create an exact replica, a copy with a twist, a work inspired by OR in the style of a famous artwork or Artist! The event was first inspired by world famous art forger Karl Sim (aka Goldie) who was born in Mangaweka, in the Rangitikei district. His works went on to become major collectors and investment pieces after some of them were (allegedly!) signed with the signatures of other artists and sold on to the New Zealand art market in the last Millennium, sparking one of the longest trials in NZ history! Karl Sim received a substantial fine and was ordered to do community work, yet he also craftily changed his name by deed pole to C.F. Goldie immediately after the trail. He went on to become well known for his cheeky pokes at the ‘established’ art world, and was often a guest speaker and presenter at Mangaweka’s and other big art events, being the subject of TV1’s ‘Close-up’ and many other newspaper and radio interviews, before his untimely departure to the big Art Studio in the Sky in October 2013. Undeterred by his passing, Mangaweka continues to honour it’s most famous son with this fun art event for all the family. Artworks need to be completed and delivered to the historic “Yellow Church” Gallery on State Highway one, by Sunday 17th of October, in preparation for the big opening event the following Saturday the 23rd of October. As traditional, there will be the actual exhibition, activities on the Museum grounds, with the Dukes Cafe open for coffee and meals, with plans for live musical entertainment in the afternoon. There will be at least two new large outdoor paintings to be revealed as part of the ongoing “Mangaweka Masterpiece’s” village open air and walk around art display project. All in all a great day of Art and entertainment for all the family.
